Crocheted Puff Stitch Slouchy Beanie

As I mentioned in a recent post, I’ve been wanting to crochet lately. I found a bunch of free patterns on blogs and on After wading into the shallow end and making some easy double crochet dishcloths and a double crocheted cowl, I felt comfortable to move forward to something more difficult.

I made a very slouchy beanie. I don’t think the pattern (from VickieHowell for Caron on Ravelry) was meant to be this slouchy, but I wanted it that way. I have another slouchy beanie and I keep wishing it was slouchier.

This hat took quite a long time. I learned a new stitch, the puff stitch, and it’s not the fastest stitch. The yarn I used was Lion Brand Vanna’s Sequins in Moonstone. I used two whole skeins. I didn’t think I would have enough (although I had a third skein on hand if I needed it), but I was able to complete it with less than ten inches of yarn left. If I had followed the pattern exactly and not made it so slouchy, I think the two skeins would be plenty.

The sparkles are subtle and I like that. They weren’t hard to crochet with either. I definitely recommend this patter if you’re looking for a stylish slouchy beanie.

I recently found the star stitch. I’m going to try it out next, but for now, the puff stitch is my favorite.

I love, love, love this. So many people are posting slouch hats on Ravelry–most of the patterns are free. It’s amazes me how generous needle artists are with their patterns! Can’t wait to see the star stitch.
