I had a bunch of ideas for the Quilt Con block(s) that I was going to make, but none of them seemed really exciting. Then, the idea of a crossword block popped into my head. It would be perfect because I had a bunch of different solids to use around the white lettering. Plus, it sort of exemplified how I view modern quilting. I made crossword quilts for my grandmothers last Christmas. I had found a crossword quilt in an old magazine that was my great-aunts. By using modern fabrics and using fabric markers instead of embroidery, I turned the quilt from the magazine into something more modern. And then I turned it even more modern by using color for this block! I think a lot of modern quilting just involves taking a traditional style block or quilt and putting a modern flare to it by either the block layout, the fabric, the quilting, etc. And I love how my block turned out. Plus, I got to sew it on my mom’s Janome Horizon. AMAZING!
