My grandma used to own a fabric shop, which was actually in her living room. She did a lot of sewing and so did my mom and her sisters. The shop carried mostly knit fabric, so a lot of the patterns she has are for knits. I dug through a couple of boxes this weekend and these are the ones I took home. Oh, and I also went through some of my mom’s patterns.
Both of those are from my mom. I really love the shirt and I will definitely be making it. The dress is OK since it’s basically a shift…as long as I ditch the sleeves and the shoulder pads. Gotta love the late 80’s/early 90’s.
My mom is pretty sure she had a dress from the pattern on the left when she was younger. I love the head scarf one of the models is wearing. The coats are pretty awesome. I’m not sure if I’m prepared yet to make a coat, but maybe someday.
The men’s swim shorts are priceless. I will likely never make them, but I could not leave that patterns. I’m also not sure if I’ll ever make a vest, but it looked cute.
Grandma had A LOT of swimsuit and underwear patterns. Some of the swimsuit patterns are OK, but not all of them. I’m not a fan of this one, but I kept it because the top is a real bra. However, I absolutely LOVE the cover ups.
I need slips. I own one…maybe two. I only wear one though (and it’s a half slip) because it’s the only one that is short enough for all of my dresses. I am totally planning on making more because slips are kind of expensive. The suit is so awesome. I wish I had the guts to make it, but even if I did, I’m sure Andrew would NEVER wear it.
Grandma said she made herself the peignoir and took it on a trip with her and it fell behind the hotel bed. She wrote the hotel and they actually ended up sending it back to her. I really love the men’s coat. I think if I could get enough practice to make a coat, Andrew might actually wear that one.
I would never wear a nightgown, but I am thinking maxi dress? You can obviously tell that the dress is totally my mom’s and I really like it if it wasn’t in that awful floral print. The jacket could be really cute, too.
I’m definitely making myself a coat from this pattern or the other one. The dress is also from my mom. Again, since it’s a shift, I think it could work if I lost the sleeves, although I don’t totally hate them. I totally hate the fabric in that picture though. The v-neck would be really nice.
On the apron pattern, it says it is suitable for vinyl fabrics. Do you see that clear one? Weird, right? However, the shape of the apron is cute. I don’t really know what to say about appliance covers, but I had to take the pattern. I do want to make a sewing machine cover and a serger cover. I already know the pattern I want to use for the sewing machine cover, but not for the serger. One of these might actually work for the serger.
Ok. Let me explain myself here. Again…I’m not into the whole nightie thing, but that pink shirt looking one on the very right could potentially make a very nice shirt dress or tunic. I’ll probably never do it, but it’s a possibility. And the shirt pattern is really not as ugly as it looks, especially the one of the left in the middle with the color block.
These are obviously also from my mom. I’ll explain myself on these, too. The dress on the very left is totally cute. It has a square neckline and it sort of awesome. My mom said she made herself a couple of them and really liked them. I would NEVER make the other two. EVER. And the shirt is sort of a cropped top that is back in style. I seriously doubt I would ever wear a cropped top and I’m not a huge fan of the criss-crossed back, but maybe. Maybe.
I love these two. I really want to make them both. I think the left is supposed to be a nightgown, but I’m thinking swimsuit cover up. And the second dress will be totally awesome for work.
More slips, which I need. The swimsuit bottoms are kind of awful, but I like the tops, so I saw potential there.
Again, I mostly got these because of the tops and the cover ups. However, that second pattern does have a string bikini bottom.
My mom said she definitely had swimsuit from the pattern on the left. No bikini’s here, but lots of tops.
Oops! The one on the left is the same, although I think it’s in different sizes. The one on the right actually has a string bikini bottom, too.
Do you see all of the potential in these? I definitely do and I cannot wait to make something from one of them. My mom and my grandma had a lot more patterns, but I don’t have room for them and/or I didn’t think I would ever make them. Grandma had a lot of patterns for children and infants, so I might grab those someday once my sister starts having kids. Grandma said she got rid of a lot of her patterns when they had the auction after Grandpa passed away. I was at the sale and I wish I would’ve been into sewing then.
Which one do you think I should make first? Do you have any vintage patterns? Have you made anything from them?
